The Friendly Skies
When I bought my ticket to Korea, I got a flight from Milwaukee to San Francisco and a connecting flight from San Francisco to Incheon. On the travel website, a bold red warning appeared if there was less than 3:30 between flights. I interpreted this as a good guideline and booked a flight that had a 4 hour wait time. I thought, if there's no red warning then it's ok.
I continued to think about that logic as I slept it off at a cheap motel in South San Francisco after missing my connecting flight due to fog. Ironically, the same fog that kept my plane from landing at the airport did nothing to delay the departure flight.
If I could do it again, I would have:
- Brought my cell phone. Even though it would have no use in Korea (unless it's an iPhone), it would have sure helped at the airport since pay phone calls are super-expensive (over $9 at SFO!) and slow you down.
- Booked a flight with at least 6 hours between connections.
- Booked with an airline that has more than one flight a day to Incheon, which would have gotten me back in the air much quicker.
- If I still missed the flight after all that, I would have booked a hotel in a touristy area, not near the airport. SFO is a long way from anything cool and the taxi prices are outrageous ($25 for a round-trip ride to a Walgreen's). I would have rather spent a few extra bucks and at least been able to enjoy my day.
Not the most compassionate airline towards stranded travellers. |
