Saturday KOTESOL Workshops in Seoul

On the third Saturday of each month, there are free KOTESOL workshops held in Seoul.  Membership isn't required.  A sense of direction is. :-)

We headed west from the Sookmyung Station and headed west through the pedestrian tunnel and up the hill.  The main campus entrance looks wonderful.  However, we spent about 10 minutes asking for directions to the Injaegwan.  When our Korean teachers put their heads together with the campus security, we realized it was a few blocks back in the direction we came.  It's outside of the campus boundaries we saw on the map.  We also missed this sign...

The final brown sign has the word TESOL and an arrow.
Pretty good hint, ^^

This is the place.

The sign said to use the side entrance (past the cars in the photo)
to get to room 105.

There are a variety of workshops for all kinds of English teachers. This month featured classroom management techniques and next month will feature error correction.  The latest schedule can be found here.

Making Slideshows on a Korean Computer

Last week, there was one day where our staff had to leave campus.  A whole day.  The entire staff.  Gone.  During that time, the teachers needed to do their best to keep the school running smoothly.

One thing I needed to quickly figure out was how to do a photo slideshow using a Korean computer.  As usual, it would have been almost impossible to discover how to do it on my own.

The computer in the multimedia room of our school uses a photo viewing program called 알씨 (v 6.1).  After putting all the photos into a single folder, I clicked on the first photo.  When it opened, it looked like this.

Right clicking the photo displays a ton of Korean options. The one to start a slideshow, which I assume would be the same command in any Korean program, is 연슥보기.

It worked like a charm.

Education.com

What makes me a fun teacher?  The kids love my English speaking, ukulele playing monkey.  It is a source of endless joy.  However, once in a while when Bonzo isn't up to the challenge, I need to create a new lesson.

When I try to create new materials for my classes, I get stuck searching for "TEFL-y" types of websites that focus on worksheets.  Some of them are pretty obscure.  A really good website for hands-on activities is Education.com.  I wish I had discovered it sooner.

A lot of the lesson plans in their kindergarten section would work very well for young English students.  Here is a link to the kindergarten page.

Ansan English Mall

Update: as of July, this shop is closed. ;;;

Our school closed a few hours early today!  It is election day here and everyone has the day off to 투표 (vote).  I decided to dedicate those bonus hours to visiting the English Mall.

This English bookstore is on Line 4 at Handaeap Station (한대앞역).  It is almost directly across the street.  Exit through the front, southwest exit.  Don't take the bridge across the highway like I did.  You'll cross the street and see this building.

The huge English Mall sign is on the other side of the building.  The front entrance has no signage for it at all.  Keep your eyes open for the 7-11.

I was very confused when I got to the elevator and found the directory.  It took me a few minutes to figure this one out.  I even walked out of the building again to make sure I was really in the right place.  Do you see English Mall on here?

I was looking for "English Mall" or "영어서점".  As you can see, it's not there.  But, check out the first entry on 4F.  "잉글리쉬몰".  This is more or less the romanization of "Englishee Moll".  Doh.

When I got out of the elevator, I still had trouble finding the store.  There isn't a sign for it in the main hallway.  Turning right off the elevator, there is a sign that says "401-1호 --->".  That's the suite number of the store. (They don't refer to it the same way twice!)  Following that sign, I arrived at this very nice looking store... which happened to be closed for the voting holiday.  ㅠㅠㅠ
