Friendliest guitar shop outside of Seoul-Nakwon

While checking out Suwon yesterday, I did some browsing at Muz Guitars.

This is a stock photo from the internet.  The store is just over 2 months old now.  I've been to a few places before that wouldn't even let me play a guitar.  I walked in and the lady working there practically insisted (in English) that I play the Epiphone Les Paul I was looking at.  She offered 4 times.  When I played it, I did my best to play well for her.  hehe.

Guitars and accessories only.  No amps. :-(
Really nice people.  I will come back.

Reliable Source for Ansan Information

Last month I was burned making a trip to an unexpectedly closed Homeplus.

I was told a few different things by a few different people.  I became wary of shopping on Sundays in general.  Then, I discovered The Ansan City Website.  Specifically, I saw this post.  It told me everything I needed to know about why the big box stores in town were closing on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month.

Only took a year to discover this one.  ^^

Gift Shop in Ansan

I found a great gift shop in Ansan yesterday.  Before, the only real place to get nice souvenirs and Korean gift items was in Namdaemun or other touristy areas in Seoul.  This shop in Ansan is very nice.  It is downstairs and has all kinds of handmade jewelry, soap that looks like cupcakes (only in Korea!), many kinds of traditional Korean artworks, clothing, etc.

Signs in the store said No Pictures.  I can't understand why.  It's really a very nice shop full of cool stuff.

I wish I could read the name on the sign.  Not sure if the address in the location box is exactly right, but the map pinpoint should be spot-on.

A bit further down the street, away from the main road, is a store called NEWS.

It has some interesting, Korean-themed gifts.  It also has school supplies as well as things like watches and perfumes.  It's a fun shop.  But don't even think about shoplifting.  Signs, in Korean, say that you will be fined 30x the price of the item you stole.  They will also call your parents!  ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

What The Book - English Bookstore

One of the must-see places for westerners in Itaewon is a store called What the Book.  It is one of the top English bookstores in Korea.  The atmosphere is awesome and the selection is massive.  An outgoing person could probably make more than a few friends by shopping here.

There is an excellent write up about this store at The Lonely Traveler Blog. They carry books of all genres, from English textbooks to the latest New York Times best sellers.  They also take in a lot of used books on trade, making the experience a bit of a treasure hunt.  They also have an online store with access to over 1,000,000 titles.

Deodorant AND Rootbeer??

One of the best places for hard to find stuff is a little grocery store with a certain NYC curb appeal in Itaewon, Seoul.

Located just south of Itaewon station, the recently remodelled Foreign Food Mart carries many foreign staples.  Much of what's here comes from India and south Asia, but there are some good American products here too.  Gillette deodorant (stick) and Mug rootbeer are regularly in stock, along with lasagna noodles and mac & cheese.  While the prices can be about double what you'd expect to pay in the US, it still doesn't cross the line into the outrageous.  While it's pretty far away from my home, the KAF is near zero because I always know what to expect. ^^

I've never been there when it hasn't been crowded.  It is a tight squeeze!

Here is a blog that has a few pictures from inside the store, before it was remodeled

For what it's worth, there is also another foreign market across the street.  It is a smaller, but it is brighter and cleaner.  It's also worth a look! ^^

Shoelaces - Final Destination!

While we were out celebrating another teacher's birthday in Jungang, someone very casually mentioned that I might find some shoelaces at ABC Mart.

Not only did I find a LOT of laces, I also found shoes in my size (US- 12, Korea 300).  In the past, I've had to spend about four or five hours going to Itaewon just to find a pair of decent shoes. I was thrilled to find this place. I can take the subway after work and, with a little luck, buy a pair of shoes and return home in less than one!

Price: 1,000W.  KAF: 0! ^^

Sizes: 250 - 300. I had to see it to believe it.
I was truly happy to find the ABC Mart!

Free Sample Rule

For just the second time in 8 months, someone offered me a free sample at a grocery store.  Many of the other teachers at my school get approached all the time.  Sometimes people want them to teach English or have a date.  It never happens to me.

As a general rule, if someone in a grocery store is brave enough to greet me and offer me a free sample, I will buy some of it.
