What The Book - English Bookstore

One of the must-see places for westerners in Itaewon is a store called What the Book. It is one of the top English bookstores in Korea. The atmosphere is awesome and the selection is massive. An outgoing person could probably make more than a few friends by shopping here.

There is an excellent write up about this store at The Lonely Traveler Blog. They carry books of all genres, from English textbooks to the latest New York Times best sellers. They also take in a lot of used books on trade, making the experience a bit of a treasure hunt. They also have an online store with access to over 1,000,000 titles.

Ansan English Mall

Update: as of July, this shop is closed. ;;;

Our school closed a few hours early today! It is election day here and everyone has the day off to 투표 (vote). I decided to dedicate those bonus hours to visiting the English Mall.

This English bookstore is on Line 4 at Handaeap Station (한대앞역). It is almost directly across the street. Exit through the front, southwest exit. Don't take the bridge across the highway like I did. You'll cross the street and see this building.

The huge English Mall sign is on the other side of the building. The front entrance has no signage for it at all. Keep your eyes open for the 7-11.

I was very confused when I got to the elevator and found the directory. It took me a few minutes to figure this one out. I even walked out of the building again to make sure I was really in the right place. Do you see English Mall on here?

I was looking for "English Mall" or "영어서점". As you can see, it's not there. But, check out the first entry on 4F. "잉글리쉬몰". This is more or less the romanization of "Englishee Moll". Doh.

When I got out of the elevator, I still had trouble finding the store. There isn't a sign for it in the main hallway. Turning right off the elevator, there is a sign that says "401-1호 --->". That's the suite number of the store. (They don't refer to it the same way twice!) Following that sign, I arrived at this very nice looking store... which happened to be closed for the voting holiday. ㅠㅠㅠ

영업시간 = Business Hours 10-7
토요일 = Saturday 10-4
휴무 = Closed holidays (like today!) and Sunday
